Hell On Wheels is an acclaimed AMC western series starring Anson Mount, and here’s some of the key locations where it was filmed.
Here’s where AMC’s western series Hell On Wheels was shot. Hell On Wheels debuted back in 2011 and revolves around former Confederate soldier Cullen, played by Anson Mount (Star Trek: Discovery), who is seeking revenge for his murdered family during the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. The series was something of a star-making role for Mount, who was previously best known for playing small villainous supporting roles in movies like Safe and Non-Stop alongside Liam Neeson.
Hell On Wheels received great reviews for its writing and production design and came to an end in 2016 after five seasons. Anson Mount didn’t have great luck with his first leading role in a series after the show ended, with Inhuman’s being a superhero show set in the MCU that was greeted with universally negative reviews and only lasted for one season. He fared much better with his season 2 role on Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Christopher Pike, the original captain of the USS Enterprise. Mount was considered a major highlight of the season, leading to talk of a possible Pike spinoff in the future.
Hell On Wheels was a gritty, rugged series that never shied away from the harsh realities of the railroad’s construction or the era it was set in. The show needed a landscape to double for Wyoming, which it found by filming on location in Calgary and other locations around Alberta, Canada. Other westerns such as Kevin Costner’s Open Range or Unforgiven had previously made use of the scenery.
Later seasons of Hell On Wheels were shot near Calgary’s Bow River, though production was forced to shut down during filming on season 3 due to severe floods in Alberta in 2013. For season 5, the Kananaskis Country park system was used to stand in for the Sierra Nevada mountains, where the railroad had progressed to. It also filmed on the CL Western Town and backlot that was home to other movies and TV shows like Wynonna Earp. The showrunners would later praise Calgary for their efforts in helping to bring the series to life, and it’s hard to imagine the series feeling as vast and epic without this backdrop.
While Hell On Wheels ended with Cullen still among the living, it seems unlikely another season will happen. There were reports of a spinoff that could jump decades ahead, but since the series came to an end back in 2016, there’s been no sign of any continuation; maybe the show really has reached the end of the line.
