Showtime releases the first trailer for ‘Happyish’; TNT renews ‘The Librarians’; Adult Swim cancels ‘Black Dynamite’; and much more.
Showtime’s Happyish gets its first trailer; ABC orders a pilot for Dr. Ken starring Ken Jeong (Community); Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) is cast in the CBS pilot Life in Pieces; TNT renews The Librarians for season 2; Walton Goggins (Justified) joins the upcoming HBO comedy Vice Principals; and Adult Swim cancels Black Dynamite after just two seasons.
Showtime released the first teaser for its upcoming comedy Happyish. Check it out below.
Described as a “scathing examination of the pursuit of happiness,” Happyish stars Kathryn Hahn and Steve Coogan as a couple that loathes themselves, but loves each other and their six-year-old son. Here is a more detailed synopsis for the half-hour series:
"Thom Payne (Coogan) is a 44-year-old man whose world is thrown into disarray when his 25 year-old wunderkind boss arrives, saying things like 'digital,' 'social' and 'viral.' Is he in need of a 'rebranding,' or does he just have a 'low joy ceiling?' Maybe pursuing happiness is a fool's errand? Maybe, after 44 years on this ludicrous planet, settling for happyish is the best one can expect."
While the teaser doesn’t offer any additional story details, it does give viewers a sense of the show’s somewhat dark, but playful humor.
ABC has ordered a pilot for Dr. Ken, a comedy led by Community alum and Hangover star Ken Jeong.
Jeong – who actually became a licensed physician before he left practicing medicine for comedy – is set to star as a frustrated HMO doctor who is unsuccessfully attempting to juggle work, marriage and parenting. Jeong is also listed as a co-writer for the show, along with Jared Stern (The Internship) and Mike O’Connell.
While Jeong’s over-the-top comedic persona seems to create nearly as many detractors as it does fans, it appears TV audiences will likely be seeing more of him either way as Jeong currently has another pilot in contention over at MTV titled Ken Jeong Made Me Do It. Jeong can also be seen on the sixth and final season of Community starting March 17 on Yahoo Screen.
We’ll let you know if ether of Jeong’s pilots are ordered to series up once we get word.
We’ll letBreaking Bad star Betsy Brandt has been cast in the CBS comedy pilot Life in Pieces.you know if ether of Jeong’s pilots are ordered to series up once we get word.
In the single-camera comedy that tells a family story though the separate perspectives of its members, Brandt will star as a harrowed mother of three who is struggling to come to grips with how quickly her children are growing up. Colin Hanks (Fargo) will star opposite Brandt as her youngest sibling, who is about to become a father for the first time.
Best known for her role as Marie Schrader on AMC’s acclaimed drama Breaking Bad, Brandt also recently starred in the short-lived Michael J. Fox Show and has recurred on Parenthood and Masters of Sex. Since audiences have become familiar with her in comedy, as well as family drama, it certainly sounds like her newest role is in her acting wheelhouse.
We’ll pass along the latest on CBS’ Life in Pieces as it comes in.
TNT has renewed fantasy-adventure series The Librarians for season 2.
The show – which follows a carefully selected team that works together to solve mysteries and fight supernatural threats – was a major hit for the cable network in its 10-episode rookie run, nabbing an average of 11.4 million viewers across multiple platforms per episode. So, it’s no surprise TNT put in an order for another 10-epsidoe season less than a month after the conclusion of season 1.
Look for The Librarians season 2 on TNT later this year.
Justified star Walton Goggins has joined the cast of the upcoming HBO comedy Vice Principals.
Goggins will co-lead the series – which was ordered for 18 episodes by the premium cable network last spring – alongside Eastbound and Down star Danny McBride. In the comedy that follows the people who “almost run” Lincoln High School, Goggins plays Lee Russell, the school’s vice principal of curriculum who enters an unholy alliance with Neal Gamby (McBride), the vice principal in charge of school discipline.
Created by McBride and frequent collaborator Jody Hill (Eastbound and Down), the series has also cast Busy Phillips (Dawson’s Creek) as Gamby’s ex and Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire) as her new husband and the frequent target of Gamby’s hostility.
The series gig comes at the perfect time for Goggins, whose starring role on FX’s Justified is coming to an end this year. It also marks his first regular role on a television comedy.
HBO hasn’t unveiled a premiere date for Vice Principals just yet, but we’ll let you know when it does.
After just two seasons, Adult Swim decided to cancel Black Dynamite.
Based on the 2009 film of the same name, the animated comedy followed the exploits of its titular character (voiced by Michael Jai White) – an ex-CIA agent and full-time ladies man – and his mission to avenge his brother’s death.
While its unclear why Adult Swim decided not to commit to a third season, the blaxploitation parody did own a decent cult following that almost certainly would have continued to help support more episodes of the series.
