The upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot casts Walton Goggins (Vice Principals) as the villain, opposite Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.
With its roots firmly grounded in the long-running and best-selling video game franchise of the same name, the upcoming feature film adaptation of the Tomb Raider property will see Ex Machina actor Alicia Vikander take on the role of English archaeologist and treasure hunter Lara Croft. Directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug, the film is all set to reboot the movie series following the release of two Tomb Raider installments starring Angelina Jolie (released back in 2001 and 2003, respectively).
Ahead of the film’s 2018 theatrical release, plenty of information has been steadily forthcoming regarding the direction that the new Tomb Raider movie is expected to take – with the latest word being that the film will focus on Lara’s search for her father. Vikander has also been vocal in regards to her own intentions to bring “something new and fresh” to the role of Lara Croft, while getting at the origins of the character. And as luck would have it, the latest word has one well-respected character actor joining the movie as the main antagonist.
According to Variety, none other than Walton Goggins has just signed on as villain in the new Tomb Raider movie. Fans of Goggins’ past work on both the big and the small screen will no doubt remember him best for his roles on the critically-beloved modern Western serial Justified, Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie The Hateful Eight, and the first season of this past fall’s HBO original comedy series Vice Principals.
Goggins has quickly become a dependably voracious presence in Hollywood, whose penchant for playing vile characters makes him well suited the role of a central villain in the forthcoming Tomb Raider movie (which will be co-produced by MGM, GK Films, and Warner Bros. Pictures). Many of Goggins’ most loyal fans likely still hold his tenure on Justified close to their heart, and his performance on that show will probably inform some of his character in the Tomb Raider reboot, opposite Vikander.
Only time will tell whether or not the new Tomb Raider will be a certified hit at the box office among general audiences – but seeing as the recent reboot of the original video game series has proven to be a hit among die-hard fans, things are looking up for the movie as well. Here’s to hoping for the very best when Vikander makes her big screen debut as the famous world traveler and explorer, Lara Croft.
