The Simpsons crossed over with Family Guy in the past but if it did that with Bob’s Burgers, some friendships would work and some would fail.
This September, it will be the seven-year anniversary of “The Simpsons Guy,” a long-awaited crossover between The Simpsons and Family Guy, two of the stalwarts of animated television families. While that episode proved to be a way for Simpsons writers to flex on the Family Guy team, it did leave many wondering what other journeys to Springfield could look like.
Consider, perhaps, how the friendships would fare if the Belcher family and friends from Bob’s Burgers decided to link up with the Simpson family and larger Springfield community. It’s easy to imagine which characters would hit it off immediately and which would need to share a Krusty Burger with a Bob Burger to find something to bond over.
Would Work: Edna And Gayle
Edna Krabappel, the burnt-out teacher at Springfield elementary, and Gayle, Linda’s cat-obsessed sister, have some shared loneliness within their characterization. However, it’s not that isolation that would bond them.
Rather, it’s the curiosity they both have. Edna’s curiosity may be more buried, but she’s fascinated by offbeat people. She’d take a strong liking to Gayle and Gayle is just an endlessly accepting person, so a true companionship could be kindled from there.
Wouldn’t Work: Marge And Teddy
Every now and then, it seems like Teddy isn’t even that friendly with the Belcher family. But as their most regular customer, he has become a de facto member of the family. If he met the Simpson family, though, they might eschew him right from the jump.
Marge, in particular, would be a bit put off by the unkempt nature of Teddy, who can become manic in his desperation for approval. She might take pity on Teddy if he was in a down-on-his-luck phase, but Marge has enough going on without adding a high-maintenance friendship to the mix.
Would Work: Milhouse And Regular-Sized Rudy
In many ways, Milhouse seems like the spirit animal within Regular-Sized Rudy. On The Simpsons, Milhouse is an archetypal nerd. On Bob’s Burgers, Rudy shows a resourceful side to that similar nature.
They would certainly be able to bond over their need for inhalers or perpetual awkwardness. It seems like they might share more in common than they do with their current friends.
Wouldn’t Work: Krusty And Mort
Mort has his humorous moments whenever he stops by the burger joint, but he is certainly a droll character. It’s to be expected when he brings the energy of a mortician. It just wouldn’t jive with Krusty the Clown too well.
And forget about the idea that it’s because one deals with death and one deals with laughter. Rather, Krusty might just be averse to the ever-present reminder of his own mortality. He has enough of that off-screen hardship without adding Mort to his life.
Would Work: Smithers And Tina
There aren’t a whole lot of children on The Simpsons who would mesh well with Tina. However, there are a few adults who could bond with Tina over their eclectic interests. For example, doesn’t it seem plausible that Smithers would be obsessed with the Equestranauts?
Considering he’s one of Mr. Burns’ lackeys, it’s also safe to assume he wouldn’t be a manipulative Brony or even a Brony at all. He’d just have an affinity for mystical creatures that Tina could certainly appreciate as an old soul.
Wouldn’t Work: Homer And Bob
One of the main must-dos of “The Simpsons Guy” was to put Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin on screen together. In this hypothetical instance, though, Bob Belcher is a much more endearing character than Peter.
Bob is also an empathetic human being who can become obsessive over turkeys, vengeance, and letting his kids be exactly who they are. Homer has flashes of that in his character, but his abrasiveness and buffoonery would be too much of a turn-off for Bob to even see his redemptive nature.
Would Work: Moe And Linda
Yes, Moe can be a bit sleazy, but fans also see a softer side to him time and again. He also is aware of where the boundaries are in his interactions with others. In that case, a perfectly platonic friendship could spring up between him and Linda.
After all, it’s hard to imagine anyone Linda wouldn’t be open to being friends with. She would find all the good elements of Moe and sympathize with him as much as possible. If anyone could see that Moe just needs a friend, it’d be Linda.
Wouldn’t Work: Lisa And Gene
Lisa is a world-class character and probably the best The Simpsons has to offer. Her worldly interests tend to prohibit her from getting into childhood schemes and muck in the same way that the Belcher children do.
So while there could be an initial bond over playing instruments between Lisa and Gene, it seems likely that Lisa would quickly realize that she and Gene don’t share much else. He is quick-witted for his age, but there’s just not enough in common for a friendship to leave either feeling anything but bored.
Would Work: Bart And Louise
Bart and Louise, on the other hand? They might be the fastest friends of anyone on this list. Louise spends countless time periods trying to convince her friends and siblings to go along with her wacky schemes. Bart often is left to complete his pranks alone.
But together they’d be unstoppable. They’d be like John Lennon and Paul McCartney or B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling. Two people on the exact same wavelength who can collaboratively create beautiful symphonies. It’s just that their symphonies would come at the harmless expense of those they feel have wronged them.
Wouldn’t Work: Ned Flanders And Jimmy Pesto
Ned Flanders puts up with a lot from Homer Simpson, his neighbor. He practices empathy and mindfulness in the name of his religion. He is not, however, superhuman. All the patience he has is practiced for Homer and any insults from Jimmy Pesto would just be too far.
Flanders would be able to recognize that Jimmy is more consciously cruel than Homer tends to be and he would not stand for it. It would also be very mean to inflict another three decades of barrages on the poor-diddly neighbor.
