The Good Doctor features a wide array of unique characters who would all find comfortable homes in the four houses at Hogwarts.
ABC’s The Good Doctor is a medical drama that revolves around an autistic doctor with the Savant syndrome. Actor Freddie Highmore started out as a child artist in films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland, and then went on to star in the heart-stopping noir drama series, Bates Motel, based on Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic psychological thriller, Psycho.
In The Good Doctor, Highmore plays Shaun Murphy, a genius young resident medic at the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital in San Jose, California. Being autistic, Shaun’s social circle is limited mostly within his colleagues. Let us try and sort the characters on this celebrated medical drama into their Hogwarts Houses.
Carly – Hufflepuff
The Head of Pathology, Carly, starts dating Shaun after the latter works up the courage to ask her out. Unfortunately, Carly has to let go of Shaun in season 3, when she realizes that despite her best efforts, Shaun had never truly loved her.
In Hogwarts, Carly would have gone straight into Hufflepuff. She is loyal and was seen devoting herself to Shaun’s whims in order to give themselves a chance at being a couple. She is clearly very calm and patient by nature and is able to appreciate how fair it would be to all parties involved if she and Shaun broke up. She is also a hard-working woman, who enjoys her experiments in the pathology lab. A true Hufflepuff, in every sense indeed.
Lea – Ravenclaw
Lea is the scatterbrained former neighbor Shaun falls for, even though he doesn’t know it himself until Carly nudges him in that direction. In the Harry Potter universe, Lea would most definitely have been sorted into the Ravenclaw House.
A house that boasts of alumni such as the nature-loving, highly imaginative Luna Lovegood and the eccentric Sybil Trelawney would have chosen Lea without batting an eyelid. The latter is disorganized and often unsure of herself. But she does not dither from starting out on her own, even if that means quitting a boring, well-paid job, and is proud of the way she is. Lea is witty and free-spirited, qualities often found in a Ravenclaw; she is also creative, and craves to live in the moment than by stringent social rules.
Audrey Lim – Gryffindor
Dr. Audrey Lim is a top surgeon who goes from being an attending at St. Bonaventure to the Chief of Surgery through sheer grit, and of course, brilliance.
Lim is a woman with steely determination, who knows what’s best for her and does not hesitate to step up. The Sorting Hat would probably have put her into Gryffindor; after all, she is able to stand up for people she believes in, given how many times she supported Shaun when his other superiors refused to give him a break. She is also brave enough to take on the big guns, and at the end of the day, bravery and courage will get one into Gryffindor.
Marcus Andrews – Slytherin
Dr. Andrews starts out as an ambitious, power-hungry surgeon at the top of his profession and always on the lookout for more accolades. When Shaun first gets hired at St. Bonaventure, Andrews is one of the main forces to offer continual resistance towards recruiting an autistic person as a surgical resident.
However, in time, Andrews becomes much more mellow and realizes Shaun’s true worth. He even willingly sacrifices his position as the president of the hospital to stand up for Shaun. Thus, Andrews would have made a brave Slytherin who goes from being an antagonistic force to a pillar of strength for Shaun Murphy.
Neil Melendez – Hufflepuff
Dr. Melendez is another top cardiothoracic surgeon in charge of the surgical residents. At the start of the series, Melendez resents having Shaun in his team, like Andrews, although not quite so aggressively.
Later on, Melendez loses his brashness to a large extent and is ready to commit himself to a relationship with Lim. He is also much more appreciative of Shaun and tries to rally his team of residents together. His hard work and dedication would have made him a suitable Hufflepuff.
Alex Park – Hufflepuff
Dr. Alex Park is a former cop who chose to go into the medical profession at a later stage in life. Park is a rock-solid personality and does not always engage brutally in the rat race with the other residents; rather, he hopes to make a mark through sheer hard work.
Park’s unperturbed frame of mind and commitment would have made him a likely candidate for the Hufflepuff House, which values hard work and patience over everything else.
Morgan Reznick – Slytherin
Dr. Morgan Reznick is competitive, mean, and not above fueling favoritism by constantly demeaning her colleagues.
Reznick would have made a prized member of the Slytherin House. Of course, her character is not out and out dark and is gradually evolving into a more layered personality as her troubled family life comes to the forefront. However, despite her own struggles, her sneaky ways and viciousness are enough to make her Slytherin.
Claire Brown – Gryffindor
Claire is the heart and soul of the team of surgical residents at St. Bonaventure, as she brings the emotional quotient into an otherwise odd bunch of people who are either indifferent or nasty to their associates.
Claire has her insecurities but she has also faced and overcome a lot of challenges in life. Her courage took her from a helpless little girl with a traumatic childhood to a brilliant young surgeon and for that alone she would qualify for Gryffindor. She is used to braving difficulties on her own and is also one of those who support Shaun through thick and thin. Claire would have made Gryffindor House proud.
Aaron Glassman – Hufflepuff
Dr. Glassman is a truly layered character so the Sorting Hat might have had a wee bit of trouble finding the right house for him. Glassman is Shaun’s mentor, his rock, and the closest thing he has to a friend, despite the age gap. He is kind, patient, a bit skeptical at times, but a powerhouse of strength for Shaun, offering him wisdom on various things such as life, friendship, and even love.
