Season 4 volume 2 of Stranger Things broke the heart of every fan with only two episodes, including through these crushing lines.

Less than a week after Stranger Things volume 2 premiered on Netflix, everyone’s favorite sci-fi, horror and fantasy show is back at the top spot on the streaming service. With over four hours of content in the last two episodes, the minds of fans are still trying to get over everything that occurred in the final part of season 4.

Following the storylines of Surfers Pizza, Hawkins, and Russian teams, the last two episodes were everything fans were waiting to see with added heart-wrenching surprises. Shocks, trauma, and deaths galore, it was hard to top volume 1 but the Duffer Brothers succeeded in breaking fans’ hearts all over again in unimaginable ways.

Papa Don’t Preach

“I Want You To Know That I’m Proud Of You…You Are My Family. My Child. I’ve Only Ever Tried To Help You. To Protect You. Everything I Did, I Did For You. I Need You To Understand. Please Tell Me You Understand.”

One of the most deplorable characters in the show is Eleven’s “Papa” Dr. Brenner, who stole her from her mother and raised her as a lab rat. Before his final moments, he preaches that his decisions are the right way to go until El finally stands up to her abuser.

While his death elicits little empathy in fans considering his treatment of Eleven, credit is due to the actor for portraying Brenner’s desperation for Eleven to forgive him and validate his decisions. Though he is dying, she realizes he doesn’t deserve her forgiveness, and Eleven’s conflicted emotions as Papa dies definitely tugs at the heartstrings as it shows how far she’s come in four seasons.

Whipping Post

“It’s Not That Bad. You Know I Needed To Lose The Weight Anyway. It’s Given Me Some Time To Think…About Who I’ve Been And What I’ve Done. I Never Should Have Sent You That Message.”

Hopper has gone through hell in the past season including being tortured for information, thrown in prison, almost killed trying to escape, and surviving a Demogorgon attack – all occurring in just vol.1. After reuniting with Joyce to the excitement of fans, she sees his weight loss and all the scars he’s amassed on his body.

Actor David Harbour lost at least 60 lbs for season 4 and while Hopper jokes that he needed to “lose the weight.” his words hide the mental effect of constant torture, starvation, and degradation he’s endured. While Hop has always seen the worst in himself, his time in Kamchatka has left him utterly dispirited and demoralized but fortunately, Joyce lets Hopper know that she would always come for him.

Lost Love

“These Past Few Months, She’s Been So Lost Without You…She’s So Different From Other People And When You’re Different Sometimes You Feel Like A Mistake. But You Make Her Feel Like She’s Not A Mistake At All… El Needs You Mike And She Always Will.”

While some may think Will’s character was underutilized in season 4, he has many moments where his emotional scenes shine through the dark clouds of the show’s bleak themes. His beautiful speech to Mike revealing his painting of the Party confirms the character is not only gay but is in love with Mike.

Hiding behind Eleven, Will speaks his truth to an oblivious Mike about what it’s like being gay in the ’80s. Being different can lead to feelings of worthlessness but the Party and Mike especially have always reminded Will that being different is not a bad thing. However, it is still heartbreaking to see that Mike does not realize who Will is actually talking about.

An Oscar-Worthy Performance

“Billy, He Made My Life A Living Hell…When I Would Lie In Bed At Night…I Would Pray That Something Would Happen To Him. Something Awful…The Day That He Died…I Didn’t Know If He Deserved To Be Saved. And I’ve Tried To Forgive Myself But I Can’t…Now When I Lie In Bed At Night I Pray That… Something Terrible Will Happen To Me.”

A fan-favorite since season 2, Max stepped up her game in season 4 to be one of the best characters in the series. Growing up with an abusive step-brother like Billy made life hard for Max but after his death in season 3, it doesn’t get any easier for her – in fact, it gets much harder.

Targeted by Vecna for the state of her mental health, Max admits to having suicidal ideation, thoughts of Billy dying, and guilt over his actual death. Sadie Sink’s performance in this harrowing speech is beyond belief and deserves all the praise for making the audience keenly feel the intense bombardment of emotions Max experiences daily as well as wishing they could help her realize her worth alongside her friends.

Don’t Stop Believing

Like everyone, Eleven has had a hard year since the Battle of Starcourt which resulted in the assumed death of her adoptive father Hopper. Despite being powerless and unable to search the void for him, she never gave up hope that he was alive.

Spending a season apart, the two reunite in the finale’s last moments in an emotional and tear-jerking scene between father and daughter that was worth the wait. Having gone through so much (especially in the last few days), Eleven breaks down in the arms of the father she always deserved to have.

He Deserved Better

Despite quickly becoming one of the most beloved characters introduced in season 4, it didn’t save Eddie from the Duffer Brothers’ unwritten rule of killing off supporting characters. Luring away the Demo-bats from Vecna’s lair, Eddie sacrifices himself to buy more time.

After having run away when Vecna kills Chrissy, Eddie is filled with shame and regret despite having a perfectly natural reaction to danger. However, he tries to redeem himself and dies a hero in the arms of his protege/little brother Dustin reciting lines from his first scene which breaks the heart of every Stranger Things fan.

She Tried

“I Know What He Did To You. You Were Different. Like Me. And He Hurt You. He Made You Into This. He Is The Monster, Henry. Not You. Not You.”

Piggybacking from a pizza dough freezer, Eleven is able to fight Vecna inside Max’s mind. However, it seems Henry/Vecna/001 is much stronger and is able to take El down with relative ease. About to sacrifice Max, El makes a last-ditch effort to persuade him of his plan.

Having learned from her speech to Papa, she has realized that she is not the monster; Brenner was but Henry doesn’t have to be. It’s heartbreaking to see Eleven still believing that people can be good and realizing that sometimes people can’t be saved or don’t want to be.

I’ve Got You Brother

“I Know That I’ve Been Distant…But That Has Nothing To Do With You…The Truth Is, I Miss Talking To You…I Don’t Want You To Forget That I’m Here. And I’ll Always Be Here. No Matter What. Because You Are My Brother. And I Love You. And There Is Nothing In This World, Absolutely Nothing, That Will Ever Change That.”

Jonathan and Will Byers are one of the best sibling duos in TV history which was upheld in season 4 volume 2 with a beautiful and heartfelt moment between brothers while waiting for the battle to begin. After not speaking to each other much, Jonathan realizes how much Will is struggling.

Seeing Will’s distress after admitting how much he needs Mike under the pretense of talking about Eleven, Jonathan’s suspicions of Will’s sexuality are confirmed. Jonathan tells Will what everyone wants to hear when they come out: he’s there for him and he loves him no matter what. Despite breaking fans’ hearts in a sweet and wholesome way, it’s still emotionally intense and reminds viewers of the potential hardship in coming out.

Ready Or Not

“I Can’t Feel Or See Anything…Lucas, I’m Scared. I’m So Scared. I’m So Scared…I Don’t Wanna Die. I’m Not Ready…I Don’t Wanna Go! I’m Not Ready.”

After baiting Vecna into her as his final victim, Max experiences excruciating pain as he slowly kills her. Thought to be saved from a spine-chilling death by the Russian team, her friends in Hawkins and Eleven fighting Henry in her mind; fan-favorite character Max is blinded and with broken limbs.

Such gruesome injuries happening to such a prominent character left fans speechless. Laying in Lucas’ arms, the usually tough Max admits she is scared and doesn’t want to die. Sadie Sink’s perfect acting in this brutal scene reminds viewers that she is just a child and doesn’t deserve this torture. While her death doesn’t last long, it doesn’t make it any less tragic.

A True Hero

“He Could’ve Run. He Could’ve Saved Himself. But He Fought. He Fought And Died To Protect This Town. This Town That Hated Him. He Isn’t Just Innocent…He’s A Hero.”

It was likely to end one of two ways for Eddie; living and the town learning the truth about the Upside Down or dying and remaining the town pariah. Unfortunately for fans who quickly adored this caring and charismatic character, Stranger Things went with the latter.

Staying with Eddie until the end, a traumatized Dustin tells Eddie’s uncle that he’s dead. It is an incredibly distressing moment for them and the viewers but beautifully performed. Dustin’s words would have been the only eulogy Eddie would have wanted and it was the perfect tribute to summarize this beloved hero.
