Rick and Morty teases their creepy new Super Bowl ad, which sees a robot Morty training a whole classroom of robot Pringles flavor stackers.
Rick and Morty prepares to take over in a teaser for the Adult Swim show¡¯s Pringles Super Bowl ad. After an excruciatingly long wait (par for the course for the wildly popular animated show), Rick and Morty finally returned to Adult Swim in November for season 4.
Not surprisingly, the show picked up right where it left off by plunging the iconic Rick and Morty into a new series of bizarre and hilarious (and sometimes disturbing) sci-fi adventures. Perhaps the most memorable episode of season 4 took an especially dark turn as Rick came face-to-face with his demons after having his personal toilet, hidden away on a garden planet that Thanos might enjoy, violated by a stranger. The season of course also had time for some more lighthearted fare including a wild episode parodying heist movie tropes and another that introduced a race of evolved snakes living in outer space.
As fans wait for more Rick and Morty season 4 (only five episodes managed to air before the series again went on hiatus), the show has revealed a teaser for an upcoming Super Bowl ad starring Rick and Morty themselves. A tie-in with Pringles, the teaser sees Morty preparing his class of robots (who bear a probably-not-coincidental resemblance to the aliens from They Live) for their Super Bowl takeover. The clip sees Morty teaching his classmates all about flavor stacking, the Pringles practice that involves taking different varieties of the chip and stacking them to create interesting taste combinations. In addition to the ad, Rick and Morty is also getting its own Pickle Rick Pringles flavor just in time for the Super Bowl. The Pickle Rick episode, in which Rick transformed himself into a pickle for no good reason, obviously remains one of the show¡¯s all-time classics.
This is of course not the first time Rick and Morty has gotten involved with introducing fans to new flavor experiences. Notoriously, the show was also responsible for McDonald¡¯s bringing back their discontinued Szechuan sauce after the obscure item was referenced in an episode. Unfortunately, McDonald¡¯s Rick and Morty-inspired Szechuan promotion resulted in chaos as fans descended on restaurants that were not equipped to deal with the sudden influx of customers. Presumably, stores will be well supplied with Pickle Rick Pringles when they become available.
Rick and Morty may in many ways seem like a strange property to get involved with a Super Bowl tie-in (the show doesn’t feature a lot of sports-related humor), but the fact that Pringles is teaming up with the Justin Roiland/Dan Harmon show to invade the air space around the big game is indeed just more proof of what an overall pop culture juggernaut it has become. The Super Bowl airs on Sunday, February 2nd on FOX, along with all the traditional commercials.
