Julia Garner, the star of Netflix’s crime series Ozark, may soon appear in a movie about the disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.
A cast member of Netflix’s crime series Ozark may soon appear on screen in a movie about the disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein as American actress Julia Garner is in talks to portray one of the infamous executive’s assistants. In 2011, Garner made her feature debut opposite Elizabeth Olsen in Sean Durkin’s acclaimed indie thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene. From there, she landed roles in notable films such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) before earning a recurring role on FX’s popular spy series The Americans (2015-18).
While Garner has maintained a steady theatrical film career, she’s quickly becoming a highly sought-after TV actress, based on her performances in Paramount Network’s Waco, Netflix’s Maniac, and the Netflix crime drama Ozark starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. In a supporting role, Garner portrays Ruth Langmore, a 19-year-old involved in criminal activities. Ozark’s first season was a breakout hit for Netflix in 2017, and the second installment premiered last August. Ozark is set to return for a third season in 2019.
Per Deadline, Garner is in talks to star in a movie about the experience of being an assistant to Harvey Weinstein. In October 2017, both The New York Times and New Yorker published reports about Weinstein’s sexual misconduct over the years, including accusations of rape and sexual assault. Upon being dismissed from his position at Miramax, Weinstein was ultimately charged in 2018 for sexual misconduct crimes involving two women. The upcoming untitled film will be directed by Kitty Green, who released the critically acclaimed JonBenet Ramsey documentary Casting JonBenet in 2017. The Weinstein narrative will focus on the day in the life of an assistant, this coming after extensive research by Green. In a statement, co-producer Scott Macauley noted the project is “a work of profound empathy, crafted to allow our audience to wholly identify with its heroine and the all-too common inequities she faces.”
While Green has never directed a scripted feature, she made a name for herself with the 2013 documentary Ukraine Is Not a Brothel, followed by the 2015 documentary short The Face of Ukraine: Casting Oksana Baiul – which preceded her unique filmmaking approach while examining one of America’s most infamous unsolved mysteries in Casting JonBenet. For Garner, she’s already primed for a big 2019 as she’ll be part of Amazon’s Modern Love, an anthology series starring Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, and Dev Patel, which is based on The New York Times’ column of the same name.
At 24, Garner is one of the most promising American actresses. Now, with the potential to land a lead theatrical role about a high-profile case, she’s close to becoming a household name.
