Black Jack Randall is easily the most evil character in Outlander – and he’s done truly horrifying things to most of the main characters.
From the first to the third season, Outlander’s Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall made his mark as one of TV’s most brutal villains. Randall was an 18th-century English military leader known for his sadistic sexual predilections and penchant for torture. He also had plenty of one-liners that he’d use while mocking his victims.
The character first appeared in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels before being portrayed by Tobias Menzies in the Starz series. The villain was eventually killed during a duel with protagonist Jamie Fraser in the Season 3 episode “The Battle Joined.” The following are the worst things Black Jack Randall ever did. (Trigger warning – many of his worst deeds include assault and torture.)
Attacking Claire When He First Met Her
The first time Claire met Black Jack was in the pilot episode. She confused him for her husband Frank since she wasn’t aware she had time-traveled to the 18th century yet. When she was fleeing after hearing the gunshots from the Redcoats, she saw Black Jack kneeling by a brook. He introduced himself as the Captain of His Majesty’s Eighth Dragoons then he began interrogating her.
When she told him her husband’s name was Frank Beauchamp and that she was looking for him, he insulted her by telling her she talked like a lady but sounded like a whore. He then attacked her and assaulted briefly before Murtagh Fraser showed up and saved her.
Punching A Corpse
Season 2’s twelfth episode saw Black Jack Randall marrying Mary Hawkins after Claire did everything in her power to make sure the union happened. Claire wanted to make sure Black Jack’s ancestral line was protected because Frank (her husband from the future) was Black Jack’s descendant.
Claire had tried to cure Alex but she was unsuccessful. Claire, Mary, and Black Jack thus watched as life slipped away from him. When it was clear that Alex had died, Randall jumped on top of his corpse and began punching it again and again. Marrying your brother’s lover and then punching his corpse is quite something.
The Jenny Incident
In Season One’s second episode titled “Castle Leoch,” Jamie narrated to Claire how Black Jack led a group of Redcoats to their home to collect horses, food, and valuables. Jamie’s father had been away attending a funeral at the time. He heard his sister Jenny screaming then rushed to the house and found two soldiers trying to assault her. As he fought them off, Black Jack appeared and placed a gun to his head.
Despite Jamie begging Black Jack to leave his sister alone, he stripped her and claimed she was very attractive. Randall then tied Jamie up and proceeded to whip him as Jenny watched. He then took Jenny with him, saying that she will give him plenty of entertainment.
Forcing Corporal Hawkins To Kick Claire
Just after Black Jack Randall had finished torturing Jamie in the Season One episode, “The Garrison Commander,” Randall summoned Corporal Hawkins. When Claire mistakenly thought he was about to leave her alone, he punched her in the stomach. He then asked Hawkins if he’d ever kicked a woman before. Hawkins was clearly terrified.
Black Jack then told Hawkins to try it and claimed that the act of kicking a woman was very freeing. When Hawkins kicked her softly, he ordered him to do so harder. He had no choice but to obey. Black Jack appeared to enjoy it very much. The torture continued until Dougal MacKenzie entered the room.
Flogging Jamie To Make A Point
Still in “The Garrison Commander,” Black Jack Randall had a conversation with Claire during which he reminisced how he’d whipped Jamie for trying to escape. He sarcastically told her that he had ordered a corporal to give Jamie one hundred lashes but he did not break. Feeling that this would set a bad example for future offenders, he grabbed the whip and gave Jamie a hundred more lashes.
In a flashback scene, Jamie’s scarred back could be seen as Randall whipped him continuously. Randall didn’t stop the lashes until there was torn skin hanging from Jamie’s back. Still, Jamie refused to cry or talk. Everyone who was staring was horrified. And then he made a remark only a villain like him could: “Jamie and I created a bloody masterpiece. It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.”
Punishing Claire For Lying
In the eighth episode of Season One titled “Both Sides Now,” Black Jack Randall demanded to know what Claire knew about the Duke. This was after she claimed that they were both working for the Duke. Randall discovered she was lying after he tricked her into thinking the Duchess was calling the shots but in reality, the Duke had never married.
Claire realized she had messed up and tried to escape but Corporal Hawkins stopped her. Black Jack Randall then tied her hands and pulled a dagger out of the cupboard. He then ordered her to reveal everything she knew about Dougal, Colum MacKenzie, and the Duke of Sandringham. When she refused. he stripped her and began testing the knife against her body while demanding she let him know if it was sharp. Luckily, Jamie showed up just in time to stop him.
Indirectly Causing The Death Of Jamie’s Father
Jamie and his sister Jenny were reunited in the twelfth episode of Season One titled “Lallybroch.” There was good news as she revealed that Randall didn’t sexually assault her. However, Jamie revealed a disturbing detail to Claire. While he was being held captive at Fort William, his father tried to negotiate for his release.
Randall stated that he’d release Jamie if he agreed to have sex with him. Jamie was considering it, given that the memories of the previous torture were fresh in his mind. He eventually opted not to give in to Randall, so the villain delivered another brutal flogging. His father witnessed the torture and it was too much for him. He ended up falling dead after suffering from a stroke.
Sexually Assaulting Jamie
The Season One finale was one of the most brutal and heartbreaking TV episodes ever. In the previous episode, Claire had sneaked into the prison in an attempt to visit Jamie but Black Jack Randall caught her. In exchange for her release, Jamie agreed to offer himself sexually to Randall.
Randall proceeded to rape Jamie as he screamed in pain. Not to forget his bizarre statement: “Jamie, I just want this to be a pleasant experience for us both.” The whole ordeal was so traumatizing that Jamie ended up vomiting. After the sexual assault, Randall branded Jamie with a seal.
The Encounter With Young Fergus
As if he hadn’t committed enough evil acts already, it was revealed in the Season 2 episode “Faith” that Black Jack Randall raped the young boy Fergus. Jamie caught him in the act and thus challenged him to a duel, something Claire didn’t want because she didn’t want Randall to die yet.
When Fergus attempted to steal perfume for Claire, he ended up going to Black Jack’s room. The villain caught the young boy and began raping him. Jamie heard the boy’s screams and rushed to help him.
Destroying Jamie’s Hand
During the sexual assault scene, Black Jack Randall pounded Jamie’s hand with a hammer and nailed it to the table he had pinned him on. As a result, Jamie wasn’t able to use his hand for a long time. He couldn’t even hold a sword.
It took plenty of rigorous training for Jamie to learn how to hold a weapon properly again. But that wasn’t the only problem Jamie had. His experience with Randall was so traumatic that he would see the villain whenever he wanted to make love to Claire. It would take a long time for the image to be erased from his mind.
