Jack Ryan is packed with complex characters, which makes them all the more fun to type using the Myers-Briggs® system.
Amazon’s Jack Ryan series was a big hit with its thrilling and action-packed first season. Jack Ryan is probably the most famous character created by author Tom Clancy and movie fans will know him from various big-screen adventures where he has been played by the likes of Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. This time John Krasinski steps into the role of the CIA analyst who, in Season 1, was on the hunt for a ruthless terrorist planning a deadly attack.
The series is compelling not only for the high-stakes action but also for the very real and interesting characters that populate the story. Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®, we can see which personalities these characters fit with. Here are the MBTI®s for the characters of Jack Ryan.
James Greer – INTP
James Greer is a very important character in the history of Jack Ryan. In the previous books and films, Greer has been seen as Jack confidant and mentor through his many struggles. However, in this series, the two men start at odds, partially thanks to their very different personalities.
Greer is an INTP type which means he can be hard to get to know. Due to his dark past, Greer likes to be on his own and doesn’t exactly take to the leadership role too well. However, when Jack presents him with the possibility of a threat, he becomes very engaged and involved in investigating.
Suleiman – ISTJ
One of the most interesting aspects of the show is its villain, Suleiman. He is someone who tried to forge a path for themselves as an intelligent and professional man but was held back by misperceptions and racism. He eventually became radicalized and turned into a very dangerous person.
Despite his murderous ways, Suleiman can be seen as an ISTJ type. He is driven, thorough and well prepared. When he sets his mind to a task, there is little that can stop him from seeing it through. He has clear goals and is willing to do anything to achieve them.
Hanin – INFJ
Hanin is the wife of Suleiman and one of the most compelling characters in the show. As her husband grows more ambitious with his evil plots, she begins fearing for the lives of her children and is willing to risk her life to take them away from all that.
Hanin is an INFJ type as evidenced by her desire to protect for family. She is strong-willed in seeing her tasks through to the end, no matter the obstacles in her way. She holds her children as the only value in her life and will sacrifice anything to keep them safe.
Dr. Daniel Nadler – ISFJ
Dr. Daniel Nadler is an American doctor working abroad who is kidnapped by terrorists along with the rest of his team. Unbeknownst to them, they are being used as a part of Suleiman’s larger plot but even through this dangerous situation, Nadler proves to exemplify the best qualities of an ISFJ type.
Nadler is only interested in serving others, no matter who they are. He is the leader of the group and does very well to care for the morale of his people. He is also committed to his duty to help anyone he can, including the people who are keeping him captive.
Ali – ISTP
Ali is the younger brother of Suleiman and one of his most loyal followers. The two brothers have been through a lot together and still risk their lives to protect one another from further danger. Although he is willing to do terrible things as well, Ali is very different from Sulieman and is an ISTP type.
Less of the strategist, Ali lives more in the moment and takes risks. He can be quite detached from the world around him in his deadly pursuits. While he has no trouble breaking laws and societal rules, his loyalty is unbreakable and unrelenting.
Victor Polizzi – ISFP
The inclusion of Victor Polizzi in this show is still a bit of a mystery. As Jack is on the hunt for a deadly terrorist, the show takes a detour to explore a subplot about a drone fighter pilot dealing with remorse over the people he’s killed. Victor’s storyline only partially connects to the main story and seems like an odd tangent.
Regardless, Victor is a clear ISFP type. He doesn’t enjoy conflict and tries his best to avoid it when he can. He is not interested in leading or following anyone. He is also willing to change his whole life around in a moment in the pursuit of something he believes in.
Samir – INFP
Samir is Suleiman’s young son and another complex character in this world. Through him, you can see how being fed lies and living with people who are radicalized can lead a person as young as Samir down their own dark path.
Samir is an INFP type in that he strives to live in the same way as his father, which he perceives to be the right path. He is loyal and interested in doing his part to see their cause through. But when met with the reality of the situation, he is quick to adapt.
Nathan Singer – ENTJ
Nathan Singer is one of the top men whom Greer and Jack need to report to. As with many films and shows of this type, Singer is generally skeptical of our heroes and in many ways, he hampers them from doing their job properly.
As a typical ENTJ personality, Singer is driven to lead and unafraid to be outspoken about his own ideas and opinions. He is well-informed and organized in this chaotic world, and he has little patience for those who do not play by his rules.
Matice – ESTP
Matice is one of the more mysterious characters on the show. For one thing, Matice isn’t even his real name, it’s just one of the many aliases he gives himself. He is a covert operative who works closely with Jack and Greer. Despite revealing little about himself, we can see he is an ESTP type.
As with most ESTP types, Matice is an action-oriented person. He lets others plan but he is a doer. He works fast-paced and is uninterested in the details. He is very loyal to his men and their safety is always a top priority for him.
Cathy Mueller – ESFJ
Cathy Mueller is introduced early on as a love interest for Jack, and fans of the books will recognize that she eventually marries Jack. However, Cathy is more than just a girlfriend character in the show and has an ESFJ personality.
Cathy is a doctor who specializes in infectious diseases. She is warm and caring in her work and concerned with the well-being of others. She is a focused and thorough professional and very respected in her field. When it comes to the threat which she is involved in, she feels a responsibility to help.
ack Ryan – INTJ
Jack Ryan makes for a very interesting hero character if only because he is drastically different from most of the action heroes we’re used to seeing. While he is shown to be capable in a fight, his real strength comes from his intelligence. It is quite clear he is an INTJ type.
Jack is an incredibly determined person once he becomes involved in the potential terrorist plot. He knows how to turn his theories into workable plans, even when no one else agrees. He is always thinking several steps ahead which is important for tackling an unpredictable enemy. He is a natural leader but is willing to follow someone he believes in.
