The Suicide Squad has a secret weakness that Harley Quinn has not only exposed, but has taken full advantage of, proving once and for all she is not scared of Director Amanda Waller. Kirk Langstrom, aka Man-Bat, is currently on the run as a fugitive and being hunted down by Waller’s Suicide Squad. When Harley Quinn gets to him first, she ties him up and decides to put her doctorate to good use and give him a therapy session, all while going radio silent from her “boss.”
The Suicide Squad are a group of supervillains plucked from jail and allowed to earn time off their sentences by joining Amanda Waller’s Task Force X. Knowing that you can’t really trust a villain means there has to be a way to make sure they don’t double cross you, and this is done by placing bombs in their necks. Should someone get out of line – BOOM! – Waller and her team can just flick a switch and they are off the playing field, for good.
However, Harley Quinn is a smart woman, and she knows just how valuable she is to the team, as well as how to take advantage of that fact. In Man-Bat #3 from writer Dave Wielgosz and artist Sumit Kumar, she does just that. She goes radio silent and ignores all incoming calls from her superiors. Harley is too busy digging into the mind of Langstrom trying to help him figure out a way for his future to be bright. Harley’s treatment of Man-Bat isn’t a whim, but rather her shrewdly understanding that Waller’s lethal solution leaves crucial leeway in non-‘life or death’ situations.
Harley chooses to let Man-Bat go before the rest of the Suicide Squad show up, further testing her relationship with Waller. Letting the person she was supposed to capture go is not exactly something she would be praised for, even if she did make it look like he got the better of her. Not every member of the Suicide Squad could get away with direct violations of orders like Harley Quinn, but there are likely a select few that could pull it off, which exposes a huge weakness of the team. The entire point of the neck bombs is so that Waller can have something to hold over their heads. However, when they realize just how valuable they are, there is a certain level of defiance they can get away with before someone will hit the kill switch on them since that would mean Waller no longer has them as an asset.
Unlike heroes acting out of altruism, or even paid mercenaries, Task Force X are only obedient under threat of death, and in situations where they know Waller won’t kill them, they’re free to disobey. For now, Harley is keeping this little secret to herself, but if she starts explaining it to the rest of the most valuable players on the team, things could get ugly for Waller. The Suicide Squad only works because the alternative is death. Without that looming over the heads of the team, members like Harley Quinn are free to pursue their own agendas, even when they conflict with Waller’s.
