What’s it about
The final season of The Originals begins seven years after the core members of the Mikaelson family ¨C Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah and Kol ¨C each absorb a quarter of the Hollow’s dark energy and flee New Orleans to keep their beloved city and young Hope safe. In the interim, Vincent and Josh preside over the Big Easy almost devoid of conflict, while Hayley and Freya watch Hope grow into a teenager, eventually opting to send her to the Salvatore School so that Caroline can keep an eye on her. With Marcel following Rebekah out of town and Elijah stripped of his memory, the danger seems to be contained¡ until a sudden tragedy forces the siblings to return home. As the Mickaelsons return to New Orleans, bringing the pieces of a centuries old evil with them, it becomes clear that the closing chapter of this family saga will be as bloody and emotional as ever.
Season five begins years after the Mikaelson family absorb the Hollow’s dark energy and flee New Orleans to keep their city and Hope safe. Meanwhile, Vincent and Josh preside over the Big Easy while Hayley and Freya send Hope to the Salvatore School. The danger seems contained until a tragedy forces the siblings home, which makes the closing chapter of this family saga as emotional as ever.

With it’s Hope-centric spinoff on the horizon, I was a little worried that Season 5 was going to devolve into nothing more than a season-long promotional vehicle for all the new characters, leavings the ones I knew in the dust. I shouldn’t have worried. The show has managed to do service to it’s spinoff without at all losing sight of what always made it great – the trials and tribulations of the Michaelson family. In fact, I think this season explores the relationships between the vampire/witch sibilings even more than some of the previous seasons did. Knowing that this is the last season, the writers have taken it upon themselves to give us some truly heart-wrenching moments, and it a testament to the amazing cast that they are superb at pulling it off and making you cry right along with them. I never expected I’d love this show as much as I do when the premiere aired 5 years ago, but this season is really reminding me why I did.
