Destiny 2 is brought offline for emergency maintenance as Bungie addresses a major, game-breaking bug that impacts the majority of players.
Destiny 2 has been brought offline for emergency maintenance. Players are fuming after the latest patch not only didn’t fix numerous bugs but introduced new, game-breaking ones. The latest patch notes tout numerous bug fixes, but ignores major and well-known ones like the ability of Destiny 2 players to become immune to environmental damage and the post-“fix” Wish-Ender bow damage bug.
The patch also opened up a new public event: Glimmer Extraction. This isn’t the one players are used to encountering ingame – instead, the new patch simply extracted Glimmer from players’ characters. Players also noticed resources and other items disappearing from their Destiny 2 characters’ inventories – though some reported no losses at all. It’s unclear what caused some players to lose materials and others to keep them, but a substantial fix is needed.
Bungie announced via Twitter that the Destiny 2 servers would be taken down for maintenance to investigate and fix the issue. After an uproar following Destiny 2 patch 2.7.1, the servers were brought down. Initially, the company tweeted that everything was coming down – Destiny 2, the API, and even the Bungie website. It later clarified that just the game itself would be brought down. Bungie confirmed that players are indeed losing Glimmer and infusion materials and that it is looking into the issue. The tweet does not say how long the servers will remain down.
The update caused a panic in the Destiny 2 Reddit community. Playerss have noted that they lost exotic shards, enhancement prisms, upgrade modules, tinctures, Blind Well charges and even Corridors of Time lore. Other players have said that weapons disappeared, though these claims seem to be less prevalent than those who have said they lost materials.
Bungie will find this issue tough to fix. The company will need to individually replace player items or roll the server back to before the update – something that is sure to upset players who have made progress since “4.7.1” (apparently, even the tweets related to game-breaking glitches have glitches) went live. Destiny 2 has produced some spectacular glitches, including the long-surviving infinite Nova Bomb energy for Warlocks in Mayhem mode, the ability to super-punch bosses off of cliffs, and guns that glitches made so powerful they had to be entirely disabled. Destiny 2 and Bungie have had numerous difficulties since the launch of the game, which debuted to lackluster reviews from even the most dedicated of fans. Bugs that should have been noticed before they went live have made matters worse. At this point, Bungie can’t afford another hiccup like this one.
