From relationships to personal tragedies and triumphs, the main characters of Chicago Fire have experienced the best and worst of life.

What makes a show stand out from the others will always come down to the character arcs fans sit and watch week after week. Chicago Fire has not failed in that department. With such a diverse and huge cast, the writers have managed to carve out a personality for everyone.

But as fans have either rooted for or against certain characters, what has come to light is that every one of them in House 51 has had their good and bad days. Firefighters are quick to run into a burning building to save lives. But Chicago Fire has proven that even heroes need help from time to time.

Gabby Dawson

Best (Becoming A Firefighter)
While Gabby is still viewed in a negative light to most Chicago Fire fans, it was Gabby who paved the way for the likes of Stella and Gianna to do what they do. Gabby fought hard to become a firefighter fighter so much so that she put her career and relationship on the line. It was a great sense of accomplishment for Gabby and other women.

Worst (Losing Kids)
Gabby figured she had the child she always wanted when she came across baby Louie. And for a while, it appeared she and Matt had formed the perfect family. But the loss of Louie coupled with the loss of their unborn baby broke Gabby down. That was the breaking point that was a deciding factor in her leaving Matt.

Matt Casey

Best (Making Captain)
Matt is a great leader. The issue for him was just knowing that himself. He had doubts early on regarding his leadership and he was one of the reasons why that promotion alluded him. House 51 respects him, and besides Kelly Severide with Squad and Wallace Boden as Battalion Chief, no one does it better than Matt Casey.

Worst (Love)
Yes, this is a broad statement but when has Matt ever been lucky in the love department? With Hallie, they were on and off until she died in a fire. Matt got married to Gabby and that ended in heartbreak as well. Now, he has chemistry with Sylvie Brett but can they get out of their own way and find the happiness they deserve?

Otis

Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters

Best (Meeting Lily)
Some of the best things in life happen by mistake. Otis meeting Lily was supposed to be just about business. Well, that meeting turned out good for Molly North and Otis on a personal level. Otis has always been in search of love but for him to finally find it, sort of made his character come full circle before his death.

Worst (Death)
Chicago Fire has never strayed away from the harsh realities of fighting fires. But losing a fan favorite like Otis was a hard pill to swallow. He was just getting his life back on track after the tragic accident and then he was gone. His death still doesn’t feel real but with so much promise gone, his departure has left a huge hole.

Mouch

Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters
Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters

Best (Marrying Trudy)
For whatever reason, Mouch was just one of the characters going through the motions on Chicago Fire in the early stages. His character took a turn for the better once he married Trudy Platt from Chicago PD. They say a woman brings out the best in a man and for Mouch that has proven to be rather true.

Worst (His Daughter)
Nothing about Mouch screams negativity as he’s one of the most solid characters on the show. However, one of the worst things to happen to Mouch was the introduction of his daughter Lizzie. For some reason, this should have been a glorious time, but Mouch and Lizzie have yet to really connect on a father/daughter level.

Christopher Herrmann

Best (His Family)
Christopher Herrmann is a jack of all trades. There is not an idea that doesn’t cross his mind that he won’t go for. Herrmann knows one speed and that’s 100 mph. But the one constant in his life is his family. That’s where Herrmann gets his strength. Herrmann talks a lot and thinks he’s a big deal but without his wife, Herrmann is not as well-rounded as he’s become over the years.

Worst (Being Passed Over For Promotion)
For years, Herrmann knew he wanted more and believed that he deserved more. Herrmann put in his time with the Chicago Fire Department but the higher-ups never gave him his proper respect. He’s always felt slighted when he was passed over for others and all Herrmann wanted was the respect he deserved.

Sylvie Brett

Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters

Best (Small Town)
Sylvie is from a small town in Indiana and for that, she tends to see the good well before the bad can come out. That’s the superpower she brings to House 51. As much as fans of Chicago Fire want Sylvie happy, there is just something in the cards that won’t let her be.

Worst (Relationships)
Sylvie came to Chicago after her fiance got cold feet before the wedding. She dated Joe for a while and that didn’t work. She even went out with Antonio Dawson from Chicago PD and that fell apart. Then it was The Chaplain who she left back in her hometown and returned to Chicago.

Wallace Boden

Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters
Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters

Best (Donna)
As with most of the men in House 51, it’s the females by their sides that keep these men grounded. For Boden, it’s his wife Donna. Not one looking for anything serious, Wallace Boden figured he was doing the right thing when he proposed to Donna after he learned she was pregnant with his child.

Worst (Losing His Stepson)
Wallace was married before Donna and took on the role of a stepfather to her son James. Heck, James even carries Boden’s last name. But when the couple divorced, Boden lost his wife and the child that he was raising. While James is still alive, he’s been pretty much written out of the show.

Kelly Severide

Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters
Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters

Best (Stella)
The same applies to Severide as it does for Mouch and Herrmann. Severide was the playboy of House 51 but Stella is the one who stole his heart. Despite his feeling for Anna, Severide tried to push Stella away but realized that she wasn’t going anywhere. She has given him a foundation.

Worst (Loss Of Loved Ones)
Over the years, Severide has gone through some tough times. His best friend Shay passed away and that took Kelly down a dark path. He would fall in love with Anna and she passed away which sunk him deeper into depression. Then his father passed and Kelly has been trying to put all the pieces together from those tragedies.

Stella Kidd

Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters
Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters

Best (Girl On Fire)
Stella Kidd is one of the characters where her past has tried to stumble here but her determination was just too strong. As a female firefighter, Stella needed a way to give back to the community, especially the little girls. She founded Girls On Fire which provides young ladies a chance to see what’s it’s like being a female firefighter.

Worst (Marriage)
Stella’s marriage ended but it wasn’t on bad terms in the beginning. Even while separated, she and her ex would still get together, and for a while, that worked for the both of them. But it was later revealed that her husband did have some deep-rooted issues. He would sneak into her house to watch her sleep then attacked Severide.

Joe Cruz

Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters
Chicago Fire: The Best & Worst Things To Happen To The Main Characters

Best (Getting Married)
Plenty of characters in Chicago Fire are looking for some sort of meaning. For Joe Cruz, it was always the aspect of family. Even in his bachelor days running with Otis, Cruz wanted more. He came from a tight family and wanted that for himself. His issue was finding the right woman. Then by accident or fire rescue, that all changed.

Worst (Losing Otis)
Losing your better half is tough. No, Cruz and Otis were not in a relationship but they were more than coworkers, they were brothers. When Otis died, it hit House 51 hard but for Cruz, a part of him died as well. He lost the one person he could run to for anything.
