The full American Gods season 3 trailer introduces Lakeside, a key location from the novel, and reveals Shadow can’t outrun his destiny. The Starz series is an adaptation of fantasy author Neil Gaiman’s award-winning novel of the same name, released in 2001. Ricky Whittle leads the cast as Shadow Moon, an ex-convict who finds out in season 1 that he’s the son of Odin, known as Mr. Wednesday on Earth, played by Ian McShane. Emily Browning plays Shadow’s deceased wife, Laura, while Crispin Glover is Mr. World, ostensibly the series’ villain. Season 1 was developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, with oversight from Gaiman, who serves as an executive producer on the show.

Unfortunately, they went way over budget in season 1, and were replaced by Jesse Alexander for season 2. Alexander, too, was let go from the show halfway through production on season 2, leaving the producers to finish up. As a result, season 2 was muddled and underwhelming, and did poorly in ratings. American Gods season 3 is up against it, then, with new showrunner Charles H. Eglee having to not only get the story back on track, but bring viewers back after the poor performance of season 2. Things didn’t start well, though, with news that Orlando Jones had been fired by Eglee.

Now, the first American Gods season 3 trailer has arrived, and it goes some way in restoring the show to its roots. The footage introduces the town of Lakeside, and the character of Hinzelmann, both pivotal to the novel’s events. Julia Sweeney plays Hinzelmann, a change from the novel in which the character is a male. There is also a look at Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon, playing a leprechaun called Liam Doyle, shock rocker Marilyn Manson as the lead singer of a death metal band and Danny Trejo as a new incarnation of Mr. World. However, the bulk of the footage explores Shadow’s struggle to outrun his destiny as the son of Odin, and Laura’s quest to find Mr. Wednesday and kill him. You can watch the trailer below:

The American Gods season 3 trailer works hard to make sure fans know the show is trying to get back on track, doubling down on its leads and introducing a number of elements fans will recognize from the book. It remains to be seen if American Gods season 3 will be able to bring audiences back, after alienating many of the core fan base in season 2. The signs are promising, though. Lakeside looks just as it’s described in the book, and the main thrust of the plot, which pits the old Gods against the new, seems to be gaining more impetus.

Whether the show will ever be able to reach the heights of season 1 again remains to be seen, but what is for sure is that Eglee and Gaiman have made it clear with this trailer that they don’t think season 2 was good enough. Hopefully, the change of showrunner ends up being a good decision rather than a bad one, and American Gods season 3 is as good as this trailer promises. It will debut on Starz January 10th.
