While some droids were primarily just cameos, the best ones were those who had an impact on the plot and main characters in The Book of Boba Fett.

Bounty hunters, Mandalorians, and Jedi weren’t the only exciting characters to appear in The Book of Boba Fett. The live-action Star Wars television series also featured a number of droids who played important roles in the story.

Some of these droids were familiar individuals or familiar droid types, while others were brand new. While some droids were primarily just cameos, the best ones were those who had an impact on the plot and main characters in The Book of Boba Fett.

RX Droids

More than one RX-series droid appears in The Book of Boba Fett. An RX droid mans a gaming table in Garsa Fwip’s Sanctuary. The RX droids are also part of the Star Liner Travel that Din uses to travel to Tatooine. It is one of these droids who makes Din remove all of his weapons–including the Darksaber–and stow them in a case before boarding the commercial flight. Yet another RX droid welcomes Din to Mos Eisley when he lands and returns his case of weapons to him.

The RX droids were introduced as part of the Star Tours ride at Disney Parks. It is a fun reference for those who have experienced Star Tours. The overly upbeat tone of their voices also makes them a perfect fit to essentially be the customer service droids for both public transportation and cantina entertainment.

EV-9D9

EV-9D9 is the cruel supervisor droid at Jabba the Hutt’s Palace in Return of the Jedi. EV-9D9 is seen in the kitchens in The Book of Boba Fett flashbacks when Boba Fett and Fennec Shand break into Jabba’s Palace in order to take back Boba’s ship. The droid is smart enough to realize that the sounds being heard are not a rat, but EV-9D9 is unable to do anything before being speared by Boba’s gaffi stick.

Fans previously thought that EV-9D9 also appeared in The Mandalorian behind the bar at Chalmun’s Cantina. However, this conflicts with the timeline of when the droid is seen in The Book of Boba Fett. The voice of the droid in The Book of Boba Fett more closely matches the voice of EV-9D9 from Return of the Jedi. It also makes more sense that EV-9D9 would still be supervising droids at Jabba’s Palace instead of serving drinks at Chalmun’s Cantina.

R5-D4

R5-D4 is the astromech droid that Uncle Owen originally tried to buy from the Jawas in A New Hope. According to the short story “The Red One” in the From A Certain Point of View, R5 intentionally malfunctioned so R2-D2 could be bought instead and pass on the important transmission he was carrying from Princess Leia. R2 explained that the galaxy was counting on him. Later in the story, R5 played dead when the Stormtroopers attacked the Jawas and after the Stormtroopers left, R5 went off on his own to find a new owner.

By the time of The Mandalorian, he is part of Peli Motto’s droid crew and can be seen among the crew again in The Book of Boba Fett. When R2-D2 brought Grogu to Tatooine, there was a missed opportunity for an R2 and R5 reunion, but it is nice to see that R5 is still kicking around and that he even helped with rebuilding Din’s new N-1 Starfighter, which is a storyline that sets up season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Ant Droids

Unlike many of the other droids on this list, the ant droids are a new kind of bot not seen in other Star Wars stories. While it is always thrilling to see familiar droids, it is also refreshing to see new types, as it makes the galaxy far, far away feel more expansive.

Seeing this group of ant droids building Luke Skywalker’s Jedi temple was an unexpected but exciting sight to behold. If these droids can work together to build a Jedi temple, it makes fans consider what other kinds of buildings, ships, or other important structures these droids could construct.

LEP Droid

When the rat catcher is summoned after Boba Fett and Fennec Shand infiltrate Jabba the Hutt’s Palace, no one expects the rat catcher to be a tiny LEP-series service droid. When Boba Fett snatches the LEP droid and holds it by the throat, the droid sobs and shuts itself down. Literally shutting itself down instead of dealing with the situation makes this one of the most relatable droids ever in Star Wars.

The shot of Boba and his allies in the finale shows that several years after those flashbacks, the LEP droid is in the service of Boba, proving that the droid still had a future after being unnecessarily terrorized by Boba.

Kitchen Droid

The kitchen droid in the flashbacks at Jabba the Hutt’s Palace bears resemblance to the iconic Star Wars character General Grievous. There is something both ridiculous and awesome about the fact that the droid uses many arms and knives for both chopping vegetables and attacking intruders.

The kitchen droid is weird and over the top in the best kind of way, much like a lot of the eclectic cast of characters who frequented Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi. It’s almost a shame that the droid is defeated so easily–all it takes is Fennec slicing into the droid’s neck while it was preoccupied with menacingly spinning its knives.

BD Unit Droid

Fans fell in love with the adorable BD-1 in Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. Fans were thrilled to see another BD unit droid in The Book of Boba Fett episode “Return of the Mandalorian” as part of Peli Motto’s crew of droids.

Beyond being an adorable and delightful Fallen Order Easter Egg, the BD droid was also important to show Din Djarin’s character development. Din hated droids through most of The Mandalorian season 1. The sacrifices IG-11 made for Grogu changed Din’s outlook on droids, and it is evident in The Book of Boba Fett as Din works closely with the BD droid and is openly appreciative of the droid’s contributions as they rebuild the N-1 Starfighter.

8D8

8D8 was seen torturing droids at Jabba the Hutt’s Palace in Return of the Jedi. Seeing him again in The Book of Boba Fett could’ve just been a fun cameo, but instead, 8D8 actually becomes a significant recurring character.

He essentially becomes Boba Fett’s protocol droid. He translates the Aqualish language when Boba meets with the head of Mos Espa’s Aqualish crime family. 8D8 also provides lots of valuable information regarding the dynamics of Mos Espa’s criminal underworld and communicates on behalf of Boba.

Scorpenek Annihilator Droids

10 Best Droids In The Book Of Boba Fett

The Scorpenek annihilator droids proved to be the biggest threat that the Pyke Syndicate threw at Boba Fett and his allies in the finale. Boba Fett, Din Djarin, and Black Krrsantan are all formidable warriors, but even they couldn’t take down the Scorpenek droids with their usual weaponry and strength.

It was only through the unparalleled physical strength and ferocity of the rancor that the Scorpenek droids were able to be defeated. These giant, terrifying machines were able to wreak relentless destruction and were well-protected by their shields.

R2-D2

As the best droid in Star Wars history, R2-D2 is also the best droid in The Book of Boba Fett. It is always nostalgic and feels like classic Star Wars when R2-D2 shows up. He continues to witness and be part of key moments in galactic history as Luke Skywalker begins rebuilding the Jedi Order and trains Grogu.

Ahsoka Tano’s appearance and her line that “I’m an old friend of the family” also had more weight because of R2-D2 and the history he shares with her and Anakin Skywalker. Also, it is hilarious to hear Din referring to one of the most important and recognizable Star Wars characters simply as “droid.”
